Trump pushes immigration deal, says 'last chance' to pass

15 February 2018, 08:26 | Glen Norman

The Senate will need 60 votes for another bill, and their measure will also have to pass the House in order to reach the president's desk.

Immigration experts cite various reasons why people eligible for DACA's protections do not apply. Susan Collins, R-Maine, appeared on the verge of a breakthrough on a rival strategy.

He stressed that "there's no secret plan to push this in any direction". "I hope everyone will cooperate so this opportunity does not go to waste".

The previous effort to revise the USA immigration system passed the Senate in 2013, but was not taken up in the House because of opposition to that proposal. John McCain (R-AZ) and Chris Coons (D-DE) does not include border wall funding, but also does not have the support of the president who ultimately has to sign the full bill. "That's neither a fair nor full debate".

"I am asking all senators, in both parties, to support the Grassley bill and to oppose any legislation that fails to fulfill these four pillars - that includes opposing any short-term "Band-Aid" approach", Trump said.

Instead, top GOP Senators made clear they want to finish work on DACA as soon as this week, as Republicans said no plan from Democrats would ever make it to the President's desk.

Pakistan SC issues arrest warrant against ex-envoy to US
Such "political" warrants had not been honoured overseas in the past and it would not work now, he added. That it disrupted lives without a conclusion is a sad reflection on how things work in Pakistan.

Even those senators who haven't supported the White House's position were optimistic about the process that was going to begin playing out. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said Sunday during NBC's "Meet the Press".

With the issue of immigration, more divisive under the present administration than it ever was, it is already a hard task for congress to be able to bridge the divide and it is unclear if any immigration bill, despite last week's bipartisan budget deal, would get at least the 60 vote required.

On stage with his friend, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Minority Leader Senator Chuck Schumer first took on the topic that's top of mind for most in Washington.

They warned Democrats to "care more about Dreamers than donors", charging the party with supporting immigration proposals that would keep businesses able to rely on cheap immigrant labor rather than paying American workers more. Many Republicans are in the same boat.

"If you're going to be a deficit hawk, you've got to be a deficit hawk all the way through", Schumer said.

"Now is not the time, nor the place, to reform the entire legal immigration system".

Online Petition Calls For a Rollback on Snapchat's Latest Update
Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel wrote in a blog post that he believed blurring the two had contributed to the rise of fake news. Snapchat its statement about the development said that new updates usually "can take a little getting used to".

The Democrats, Schumer said, are focused like a laser on finding a bipartisan bill that can pass the Senate to protect the "Dreamers".

Hoyer added that Republicans blocked out multiple months of floor debate past year for repealing Obamacare and cutting corporate taxes, compared to just a handful of days for immigration.

There has been some talk of a one-for-one offer - Democrats would get Dreamer protections in exchange for the President's $25 billion in border security money, as Democrats aren't very interested in the President's other immigration ideas.

In the House, Speaker Paul Ryan is taking fire from some in his rank-and-file who want a broader bill that can better enable a crackdown on border crossings and employers who hire undocumented immigrants. "We're on the verge", said Sen.

Durbin also scoffed at Kelly's assertion that "Dreamers" would not be deported after the March 5 deadline arrives. Dreamers are young immigrants who were brought to the US illegally as children and still have no permanent protection from deportation. However, a recent court ruling has rendered that deadline meaningless.
