Twelve people died from the flu in North Carolina last week, pushing the 2017-18 death toll to 276.
The most recent national statistics show CT is among 45 states where flu is considered widespread this year. While cases may be down, flu remains widespread, and health providers in the coalition are remaining vigilant.
This year's flu season ranks among the most severe in recent years. It will include a strain of Influenzavirus A subtype H1N1 identified in MI in 2015, a strain of subtype H3N2 from Singapore in 2016, as well as a B type from Colorado in 2017, and another from Phuket in 2013. Although the doctor thought her symptoms were atypical of flu, a lab test came back positive for the A strain of the influenza virus, she said in a telephone interview.
Incidents of flu have also declined across the nation, according to the CDC.
Cell and recombinant vaccine construction technologies are capable of producing vaccines that are better created to deal with circulating strains of influenza virus, said GlobalData.
Flu season did not hit its peak in Georgetown County until the following week - February 4-10 - when 505 new cases were diagnosed. That peak level of intensity was the highest seen since the swine flu pandemic of 2009. The CDC recommends the vaccine for everyone over the age of 6 months. "We appreciate the community's support in helping us protect patients, visitors, and staff from the spread of the flu during this especially busy influenza season".
Even though flu numbers are higher than previous years across the board, the Northern Zone of Nova Scotia, which includes Colchester, Cumberland and parts of Inverness county among others, has been the least affected by influenza, with only 32 confirmed cases so far.
Flus generally are more serious in the youngest and oldest and those with compromised immune systems, but the flu this year has sent more children than adults and seniors to emergency rooms for treatment.

Experts identify the strains most likely to infect people a year ahead of time, meaning unexpected strains can come out of the woodwork and cause chaos.
A late-season strain is going around, and health officials say people who haven't been vaccinated should still get a shot.
