This wasn't there the day before
To build the house, ICON developed a mobile 3D printer called the Vulcan, which is created to operate in conditions where power isn't reliable and potable water isn't readily available - like rural El Salvador or Haiti. The charity's mission is to place people without adequate housing into a proper shelter, taking them away from the throes of "survival mode".
The 3D Vulcan printer which was used in making the house is reported to be massive, but still portable.
3D-printing offers several advantages over traditional building methods, ICON co-founder Jason Ballard said in a statement: "With 3D-printing, you not only have a continuous thermal envelope, high thermal mass, and near zero-waste, but you also have speed, a much broader design palette, next-level resiliency, and the possibility of a quantum leap in affordability". The companies are targeting the end of 2018 for the first homes to be printed and expect to have the first 3D printed community completed by 2019.
New Story is also involved in urban planning, and can build homes around schools, play areas and employment opportunities. To date, the company has built more than 1,500 low-priced, high-efficiency homes in developing countries like Bolivia, Haiti, and Mexico.
"ICON believes, as do I, that 3D printing is going to be a method for all kinds of housing", New Story co-founder Alexandria Lafci added. For this venture to succeed, they have to be the best houses...
Since these structures need to be sturdy and hospitable, the companies aren't taking any risks and will be refining the process right up until they take it over to El Salvador.
