Guterres: Situation in the Middle East threatens worldwide peace and security

UN chief calls for more equitable globalisation

Antonio Guterres was speaking to a special meeting of the UN Security Council, called by Russian Federation.

"Syria today is the most serious threat, and there is no military solution to the conflict", UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres tells the UN Security Council.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres said at the session that the worsening situation in the Middle East is threatening global peace and security. Meanwhile, Russia and the United States trade accusations over suspected chemical attack in Syria.

I have also closely followed the events in the Council and I regret that they have not been able to reach an agreement so far, he said in a statement.

"The Cold War is back - with a vengeance but with a difference", he added.

He said Syria represents the most serious threat to worldwide peace and security today.

"Our president has not yet made a decision about possible action in Syria. This is exactly the risk we face today - that things spiral out of control", said the United Nations chief.

On Tuesday, the deeply divided Council failed to pass a resolution to launch or support a probe into the alleged use of chemical weapons Saturday in Douma, near Damascus, despite three separate votes on rival proposals from the United States and Russian Federation.

A war of words has erupted between Washington and Moscow over the issue, with US President Donald Trump and his allies in the West threatening to take military action against Syria.

Haley also said that Russian Federation used its veto power to protect the Assad regime and prevented the punishment of those who use chemical weapons in Syria.

During the meeting, Britain's permanent representative to the United Nations Karen Pierce said that Russian actions regarding Syria are "the latest in a pernicious chronology of disregard for worldwide law" by Moscow.

In remarks to the Security Council in NY, he said: "I appeal to the Security Council to fulfil its duties and not give up on efforts to agree upon a dedicated, impartial, objective and independent mechanism for attributing responsibility with regard to the use of chemical weapons".
