"Lee came up with, I don't know, 150 pages of insults".

The role made an impression on viewers, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination and paved way for more film opportunities. Ermey was originally hired as only a technical advisor on the film, but Kubrick was so impressed with Ermey he cast the Marine in the film, replacing actor Tim Colceri.
