Protests erupt in Armenia ahead of ex-president's 'appointment as PM'

Dashnaktsutyun Party ruling coalition's parliamentary session on Monday, and with respect to nominating ex-President Serzh Sargsyan as the next Prime Minister, lasted about five minutes, NEWS.am reported.

The Ministry said some have already been discharged from medical institutions.

The demonstrations started oat 8am when the Opposition MP, Nikol Pashinyan closed one of the main streets of Yerevan- the Baghramyan Avenue, by lying down in front of the buses. Earlier on Monday, demonstrators marched through the centre of Yerevan and blocked streets after Pashinian called on Armenians to prevent Sarkisian's political transition.

On the same day, protesters led by Pashinyan seized the building of Armenia's Public Radio for around an hour. Sargsyan, whose party holds a majority in parliament, is set to be easily approved for the premiership on Tuesday.

Wholesale inflation eases marginally to 2.47% in March'18
The inflation data for January was revised upwards to 3.02 per cent from the provisional estimate of 2.84 per cent. Inflation for fuel and power segment came at 4.70% in March as compared to 3.81% for the previous month.

"Something unprecedented is happening in Armenia - the same person wants to become the country's leader for a third time", Pashinian said at the weekend. Several hundred people sat or laid down on pavements, blocking roads leading to the parliament building and universities. Some protesters began to build barricades with trash bins and benches. The new system sees the president's powers weakened and the prime minister taking a dominant role. The Constitution of Armenia was changed, transforming it from presidential to a parliamentary state.

People oppose the appointment of former President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister.
