A firefighter battling the out-of-control grass fire burning in Sydney
The fire resulted in hundreds of people being evacuated from their homes on Saturday evening with flames nearly reaching properties at Holsworthy and Wattle Grove and spot fires later threatening Sutherland and Menai.
"Residents in Illawong, Bangor and Picnic Point are experiencing ember attack and should continue to monitor for any new spot fires in the affected areas".
The RFS at 7am said the easing conditions had allowed firefighters to begin back burning along Heathcote Drive.
A large number of firefighters remain on the ground working to slow the spread of the fire, which continues to burn in a southeasterly direction towards Barden Ridge.
"The strength of the wind, and the dryness of it and the conditions over the weekend - it is miraculous that we're here this morning talking about no homes lost", he said.
"Most of those houses that burnt down were not from the fire front, it was from a spot fire or from a burning ember catching on fire on somebody's roof."
Fire and Rescue and RFS Crews from Kariong, Terrigal, Copacabana, Hamlyn Terrace and Wyoming are among the 500 firefighters and 100 trucks fighting the flames in Holsworthy, Menai, Sandy Point and Alfords Point.
Firefighters fight flames close to homes in Corryton Court, Wattle Grove in Sydney.
The RFS issued the warning for residents, saying there has been increased fire activity with strong winds and embers sparking new fires.
RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons has warned, "the risk remains very real".
He said the aircraft had unfortunately already been returned to the United States because they were always sent back by the end of March when temperatures were traditionally cooler.
"We're certainly looking to maximise the amount of time we have them here".
NSW Police on Sunday evening announced a task force had been set up to investigate whether the fire, which began in the vicinity of Leacocks Reserve in Casula, was deliberately lit.
