At least 500 educators are expected to demonstrate at the state Capitol in Denver on Monday to push for more financial support, the Colorado Education Association says, in what will be just the latest in a wave of teacher protests at USA state capitols this year.
Beise says authorities don't file charges against children that young, they instead try to get them help.
Englewood Schools Superintendent Wendy Rubin says that over 70 percent of the district's teachers are expected to be absent. He is the pre-engineering teacher and head of the Engineering Academy at Thompson High School.
"The positive state revenue forecast clearly demonstrates there is substantially more money available this year and therefore we can and must do a better job funding our public schools", Dallman said.
Some school districts were forced to close because teachers did not report for work.
And even though lawmakers tried to reverse some of those cuts by passing a almost $500 million tax to increase spending, it's not enough, said Robin Wiser, a high school science teacher from Berryhill. "We need a viable profession". "As teachers, we've become complacent". Per-pupil spending in Colorado has ranked near the bottom in the nation.
And though she'll see her salary increase by about $5,800 with the new pay scale, after 10 years in the classroom, Wiser said she now only makes about $34,000 with a master's degree in chemistry. "ETFO's education agenda calls for greater student access to specialist teachers to provide more support in the arts and physical education as well as more guidance teachers and teacher-librarians". Extrapolating that to the full association, members may be spending as much as $23 million per year out of pocket, according to its website. In comparison, Wyoming teachers earn $US58,000 and have a lower cost of living.
