Does Britain Support Air Strikes in Syria?
17 April 2018, 03:59 | Glen Norman
More women are employed in Britain than ever before
British Prime Minister Theresa May defended yesterday her decision to launch air strikes against Syria, answering criticism over her bypassing of parliament by saying lawmakers could now hold her to account.
"But it is my responsibility as prime minister to make these decisions and I will make them".
May's government is looking to reinvigorate the Commonwealth, a 53-country network of mostly former British colonies, as it seeks to define its post-Brexit role in the world as a leader of free trade and active global citizen.
May has been criticized for making the decision without consulting parliament.
"We have always been clear that the Government has the right to act quickly in the national interest", Ms May said, calling the military action "not just morally right but also legally right".
Syria and Russian Federation have both denied that Syrian Government forces carried out the Douma gas attack, suggesting it may have been staged to implicate them. They're predicated on Moscow's support for the Bashar Al-Assad government in Syria. "If not, she's the one that will take the blame".
"The Syrian regime has reportedly been attempting to hide the evidence by searching evacuees from Douma to ensure samples are not being smuggled from this area", she said.
"There is absolutely no question about their right to remain and I am very sorry for any confusion or anxiety felt", interior minister Amber Rudd told parliament during an emergency debate. But the after-the-fact debate - without a binding vote - did not satisfy angry opposition lawmakers.
"We can not in good conscience, talk about the young people of the world, about securing a legacy for our children and grandchildren, without tackling a disease that, worldwide, kills one of them every two minutes", she will say.
Ms May rejected the claim.
"The current state of U.S. and United Kingdom network devices, coupled with a Russian government campaign to exploit these devices, threatens our respective safety, security, and economic well-being", the technical alert said.
"People should not be concerned about this - they have the right to stay and we should be reassuring them of that", Mordaunt told the BBC. Pressed over the years-long clampdown on illegal immigration by the Conservative-led government, she also admitted that her department could "sometimes lose sight of the individual".
