The search and rescue teams in the United States recovered the bodies of two more members of the Indian American family that had gone missing while travelling from OR to California about 10 days ago.
The family's submerged vehicle was discovered about 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the Eel River after a boating team noticed a gasoline smell about half a mile from the reported crash site, Mendocino County Sheriff's Department officials said in an updated news release.
Gas smell led crews to vehicle in river, bodies
The crash killed a married couple, Jennifer Jean Hart and Sarah Margaret Hart, both 38, and at least three of their six children. A poster shared by friends and relatives on social media suggested that the SUV matched the Thottapilly family's vehicle.
The vehicle was encased in a large amount of sediment from the river current, and it took hours for the auto to be towed out of the water. The authorities on Sunday recovered two bodies belonging to a family who disappeared during a road trip this month.
The family was traveling from Portland, Oregon, to their home in the Los Angeles suburb of Santa Clarita.
The search is continuing for Siddhant Thottapilly.
The vehicle was about 4 to 6 feet beneath the water, but visibility was poor and the vehicle was covered in sediment from the river current.
Authorities searching for a family whose SUV plunged into a rain-swollen Northern California river have found the vehicle and the body of a man and a girl inside it. Just last week, the mom's body was recovered.
Siddhant Thottapilly, 12, remains missing. Relatives reported them missing two days later. They were reported missing April 8 after failing to show up for a visit with relatives in San Jose. The family was last heard from in the town of Klamath, Del Norte County, on April 5.
The incident happened about 30 miles from the area where another family's SUV plunged 100 feet down a cliff off the scenic Pacific Coast Highway and into the ocean. In that case, Jennifer and Sarah Hart and three of their six children were found dead at the scene and three other children remain missing. Coroner's officials were later able to identify that individual as Soumya Thottapilly, 38.
