Talking vehicles, which have been tested in pilot projects and by USA carmakers for more than a decade, use dedicated short-range communications to transmit data up to 300 meters, including location, direction, and speed, to nearby vehicles.

The Japanese automaker reports in a Monday, April 16 news release that Toyota and its Lexus brand will start working on developing what it is calling the Dedicated Short-Range Communications system. DSRC technology, which has been comprehensively tested through government-industry collaborations and is already deployed in some areas of the USA, supports the broadcast of precise anonymized vehicle information several times per second, including location, speed and acceleration. The company says most of its USA models should have the feature by the mid-2020s.

The real-time information can provide drivers warnings about potential hazards such as icy conditions, traffic jams and accidents.

The system will reportedly communicate using seven channels, and does not require a cellular or data network subscription.

By allowing vehicles' intelligent systems to collaborate more broadly and effectively through DSRC technology, we can help drivers realize a future with zero fatalities from crashes, better traffic flow and less congestion.

Andrew Coetzee, Toyota's group vice president of product planning for North America, said short-range wireless communications chips will be put in Toyota and Lexus models in the United States in three years, although the goal is to adopt the technology across most its models by the mid-2020s. Communication can also be enabled to provide helpful real-time information to drivers, such as potential hazards, slow or stopped vehicles ahead, or signals, signs, and road conditions that may be hard to see.

General Motors started offering such a technology in its Cadillac CTS models a year ago, but it's still the only commercially available vehicle at the moment to have such a system.

Toyota and Lexus have been selling vehicles equipped with DSRC in Japan since 2015. This technology provides drivers with useful and detailed surrounding vehicle and traffic signal information.

In January 2017, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Federal Highway Administration V2I guidance aimed at improving safety and mobility by accelerating the deployment of V2I communication systems. Toyota aims at being the pioneer in this technology and also hopes that other manufacturers will follow and get in this technology in their cars. The US is a big market and certainly will benefit by this.
