The weather alert has been issued by Met Eireann with high winds expected

Status Yellow weather warning strong winds to reach Kildare by this evening

'Rainfall accumulations of 25 to 50mm expected over the period, with the potential for higher amounts on hills and mountains. Localised spot flooding possible.

The yellow rainfall warning is in place for counties Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Waterford until 9am on Tuesday.

This, according to BBC weather forecaster Barra Best, signals the beginning of Storm Irene which is set to batter the country as it makes its way up from Portugal.
