Iran official says Europe has 60 days to give nuclear 'guarantees'

Iran official says Europe has 60 days to give nuclear 'guarantees'

Just three days after pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal the U.S. has begun to make good on Donald Trump's promise to increase sanctions against Tehran. In a separate interview on CNN's State of the Union, he said Iran's economic condition is "really quite shaky", so the impact of sanctions "could be dramatic".

Bolton also repeated the administration's objection to the sunset provisions in the Iran deal, which President Donald Trump had called "totally unacceptable", reported CNN.

"I am hopeful in the days and weeks ahead we can come up with a deal that really works, that really protects the world from Iranian bad behavior", Pompeo said.

"It depends on the conduct of other governments", he said.

On May 9, President Trump announced the U.S. withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or the Iran nuclear deal which limited the country's uranium enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief.

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates said while the Iran deal was "a flawed agreement" because of a lack of unfettered inspections and other problems, leaving the deal isolates the US, and Trump should have extended it for at least another six months to work with allies. "Let them see each other, and decide, in our case, whether we judge that Kim Jong-Un has made a strategic decision to give up nuclear weapons".

He then said pre-existing United States sanctions on Iran would be reinstated, telling reporters: "Powerful sanctions will go into full effect". Hostilities between Iran and Israel have already escalated in recent days.

"I heard one of the primary industry representatives postulating that it might mean, if nothing else, that it's more hard to increase exports to iran who, of course, used to be a much larger trading partner of New Zealand than they are even now", Mr Parker said.

"If the nuclear deal is to continue, the interests of the people of Iran must be assured", Zarif added. "There's real utility in bringing these bringing these two leaders together", Bolton said of the upcoming in Singapore meeting between Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un.

"I think at the moment there's some feeling in Europe - they're really surprised we got out of it, really surprised at the reimposition of strict sanctions".

"I think you have to start first with the fundamental deficiencies of the deal itself", Bolton said.

Bolton said Europe was still digesting the May 8 move by Trump.

Germany said it will spend the next few months trying to persuade Washington to change its mind.

Trump on Tuesday announced his intention to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, calling the multilateral pact "defective at its core" and unable to fully prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. "It's clear that for that we have to maintain economic incentives, and that would not be easy after the USA decision" he said.

In an interview with ZDF public television, Altmaier noted the United States had set a 90-day deadline for foreign firms to comply with the return of sanctions and that this period could be used to convince Washington to change course.
