Stephen Hawking's family have invited time travellers to his memorial service, seeking to tackle one of the curiosities that eluded the British physicist during his extraordinary life.

Westminster Abbey will also be open to the public free of charge after the service so people can pay their respects at his grave.

Hawking's ashes will be laid to rest between the grave of Sir Isaac Newton who was buried there in 1727, and the final resting place of Charles Darwin, buried in 1882.

The burial ceremony of the ashes of the physicist Stephen Hawking was allowed to visit the time travelers - on the website, declarer tickets for the event can register people born before 31 December 2038. Up to 1,000 places are available at the Service of Thanksgiving, although entering your details does not guarantee you a place.

After the "time traveller party", held in June 2009, Prof Hawking remarked that the fact that no-one turned up was "experimental evidence that time travel is not possible".

A spokesman said: "We can not exclude the possibility of time travel as it has not been disproven to our satisfaction".

The physics professor said he put out the invitations after the event, with the thinking that if time travel was possible, people would leap back a few years to go to the party.

In January a year ago, Prof Hawking posted a touching tribute to his family, friends and others who have "helped and supported me along the way and made my universe so full of life, love and energy".
