Gap has pulled the T-shirts and said it respects China's sovereignty and territorial integrity
Chinese netizens were also angered that the maps appeared to exclude southern Tibet and did not include territory in the South China Sea which China has recently been asserting claims on.
Hundreds of people complained on Gap's official account on China's Weibo microblogging website, the daily said.
USA retailer Gap Inc has been forced to apologise for selling a T-shirt which it said had an incorrect map of China, adding it would implement "rigorous reviews" to prevent a repeat mistake. It also added that it would implement more rigorous reviews to ensure the same thing would not happen again. The T-shirts themselves were not actually sold in China, said the Gap headquarters in Shanghai to the Global Times.
In a tweet, People's Daily showed the offending T-shirt alongside what it considers to be the correct map.
On April 25, it sent dozens of global airlines a written threat of severe punishments if they don't change their websites to declare that Taiwan is part of China - a move that provoked a strong pushback from the White House.
"China's internal Internet repression is world-famous".
White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders called the threat "Orwellian nonsense and part of a growing trend by the Chinese Communist Party to impose its political views on American citizens and private companies".
