Margot Kidder, actress best known as Superman's Lois Lane - obituary
16 May 2018, 03:24 | Elsie Buchanan
Margot Kidder played Lois Lane
One was Smallville, the long-running WB (and later CW) series based on the Superman saga, in which she turned up in two episodes in 2004, though not as Lois Lane.
Kidder, 69, became a household name in 1978 for her role in "Superman: The Movie" opposite Christopher Reeve, but also fought manic depression that left her homeless in the late 1990s, People reported.
Kidder had a debilitating auto accident in 1990 that left her badly in debt, confined her to a wheelchair for most of two years and worsened the mental illness she had struggled with for much of her life. She also returned to her fright-film roots with The Amityville Horror (1979), a major hit.
The actress died in her sleep at her home on Sunday in Livingston, Mont., her publicist Camilla Fluxman Pines confirmed to Variety.
With her citizenship, Kidder was an activist and challenged the Iraq War. However, she opted to look at it in a more positive light over the years. If you're a fan of Superman: The Movie, then you know that Kidder's chemistry with Christopher Reeve was one of the most appealing elements of the movie, and Kidder won a Saturn Award for Best Actress for her performance.
"I read books", she told The Montana Standard in 2016, "and hung out with friends in the woods or at the hockey rink".
Kidder was born in Yellowknife, Canada, and graduated from a Toronto boarding school before pursuing acting.
She spent the last decades of her life living in Montana and engaging in political activism, including protesting the USA military action in Iraq. Her collapse, she said, was triggered by a virus on her laptop that erased years of work on a memoir. In 2011 she was arrested while protesting against an oil pipeline at the White House. Once each to author Thomas McGuane, actor John Heard (for a grand total of 6 days), and French director Phillipe de Broca. Her most recent credit was a year ago in an independent movie, The Neighborhood. "She said, 'I think there's going to be a lot more death like that happening".
She is survived by her daughter.
