Tennessee joins states suing Oxy Contin maker
The Attorney General says filing a lawsuit is an important step in fighting addiction by going after the root of the problem.
"I believe that credible evidence exists to conclude that Purdue knew the serious risks of long-term opioid use and minimized or ignored evidence that its product could be deadly", Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem said of one of the nation's leading manufacturer of prescription opioids, including OxyContin.
The lawsuit also alleges that the drug company downplayed concerns about opioid addictions by "hyping" a concept known as "pseudo-addiction".
In 2016, 1,375 Texans died of opioid-related deaths.
North Carolina is taking a big drug company to court. Laxalt's office has filed suit against any other pharmaceutical companies.
"It's time the defendants pay for the pain and the destruction they've caused", Florida State Attorney General Pam Bondi told a press conference.
Lawsuits have already been filed by 16 other USA states, Puerto Rico against the privately held company.
Stamford, Connecticut-based Purdue, in a statement, denied the accusations, saying its drugs were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and accounted for only 2 percent of all opioid prescriptions. The defendants include opioid manufacturers Purdue Pharma LP, J&J, Teva, Endo International Plc and drug distributors AmerisourceBergen Corp, Cardinal Health Inc and McKesson Corp.
