US Hits Iranian Central Bank Governor With Terror Sanctions
The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on May 15 announced sanctions against Valiollah Seif and another senior official in the Central Bank of Iran, Ali Tarzali.
"These actions build upon President Trump's May 8 decision to cease the United States' participation in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and begin reimposing U.S. sanctions that had been lifted under the JCPOA, including against the Central Bank of Iran", Tuesday's statement said. The Iraqi bank and its chairman also are being punished with sanctions. It also targeted Iraq's Al-Bilad Islamic Bank and its top two executives, and a liaison between IRGC and "Hezbollah", which Washington has designated an worldwide terrorist group.
The Treasury said Seif covertly moved "hundreds of millions of dollars" to Hezbollah from IRGC via Al-Bilad Islamic Bank.
That deal, reached in 2015 and formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), sought to curb Iran's pursuit of a nuclear arsenal by providing significant sanctions relief for the country. Its actions are meant to build on President Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the Iran Nuclear Deal (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action).
The US says it's also imposing so-called secondary sanctions on Seif.
Sometimes, when the USA punishes people with sanctions, it prohibits Individuals or US firms from doing enterprise with them.

The U.S. sanctioned nine Iranian citizens and companies on Thursday for allegedly operating a currency exchange network that - with the help of Iran's central bank - transferred millions of U.S. dollars on behalf of the Quds force.
The Treasury also blacklisted assistant director of the global department of Iran's central bank Ali Tarzali and the chairman of Al-Bilad Islamic Bank Aras Habib.

Tuesday's action seeks to cut off what the U.S. called a "critical" banking network for Iran, and deny those blacklisted access to the global financial system.
