Larry Nassar victims receive record-breaking settlement

The Michigan university where serial sex abuser Larry Nassar practiced medicine announced Wednesday it has agreed to a $500 million settlement with hundreds of former victims of the ex-USA Gymnastics doctor.

As part of the settlement agreement, the school will distribute $425 million to the victims (about $1.28 million each) and put $75 million into a trust fund for victims who may come forward in the future.

Rachael Denhollander was the first woman to go public with allegations of abuse against Nassar in September 2016.

MSU's settlement with Nassar's victims, more than 250 of whom spoke publicly about his abuse during his sentencings in Ingham and Eaton counties this winter, does not end the various legislative and criminal investigations the university faces.

I remain deeply disappointed at the missed opportunity for meaningful reform at the University. "We appreciate the diligent efforts of Mick Grewal and the survivors' attorneys throughout the nation who worked to obtain this measure of justice and healing", he said.

Nassar used to work at the school as a sports doctor.

In January, Larry was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison after pleading guilty to seven counts of criminal sexual misconduct in MI. The school, however, has insisted that no one covered up assaults. It does not address claims against USA Gymnastics and United States Olympic Committee (USOC), or others parties that have been sued in connection with Nassar.

In 2014, for example, Amanda Thomashow reported Nassar's abuse to Michigan State officials.

Student groups and faculty have long called for more significant action from MSU's administration regarding the Nassar scandal, including asking members of MSU's Board of Trustees to resign so the university could move on and recover and strengthening university policies regarding sexual abuse.

White tells NPR the agreement is bringing "a sense of relief".

I am very grateful to have reached a settlement with MSU that reflects the incredible damage which took place on MSU's campus. Interim president John Engler wants the costs to be paid for by tuition and state aid, however, lawmakers do not want state aid to be used in the settlement.
