At least 124 people in 36 states have been sickened in salmonella outbreaks linked to contact with live poultry in backyard flocks, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday. No deaths have been reported from the bacterial infections, but 31 people have been hospitalized.
Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development supervisors say 32 people in Michigan have become ill because of the outbreak.

In addition, consumers who do not remember what store their pre-cut melon was purchased from should also discard it without consuming it. The CDC is not recommending people avoid whole melons. The CDC said it is working to identify a common supplier that might be the original source. Most bought their pre-cut melon at Walmart or Kroger stores.
The illnesses were first reported on April 30, and the last documented case was on May 28.
The Illinois Department of Public Health says six cases of salmonella have reported in that state. Both chains are cooperating with the investigation and have removed fruit associated with the outbreak from their shelves.
