Soyuz spacecraft’s crew transfers to orbital outpost after docking

Three new Expedition 56 crew members were welcomed aboard the International Space Station today.

The Soyuz spacecraft is carrying with it some of the well known and experienced crew members to reach the ISS. Case in point, a recent launch of a Soyuz rocket from Russia's Roscosmos sent three new astronauts to the ISS (Serena Auñón-Chancellor from NASA, Sergey Prokopyev from Roscosmos, and Alexander Gerst from the European Space Agency) to take over for three astronauts who recently returned to Earth. They were received by Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev and USA astronauts Andrew Feustel and Richard Arnold aboard the International Space Station. In this mission three astronauts who are form European Space Agency, the United States and Russian Federation are included, and they are blasted off on Wednesday for the mission to the International Space Station. This coverage will be followed by coverage of the opening of the hatches in between the spacecraft and the space station.

Russian Federation was suspended from the group - then called the G8 - in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. On Thursday, although he said it was important to remain civil, he signaled his intention to close ranks with other leaders.

The new space expedition's crew will stay for 187 days aboard the orbital outpost.

At five hours and 23 minutes into the spacewalk, Feustel will surpass NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson's record of 60 hours and 21 minutes to move into third place for cumulative time spent during spacewalks. They launched to the International Space Station at 7:12 a.m. Wednesday, and docked at 9:01 a.m. Friday morning.
