Trump and Kim signed a document that calls for Pyongyang to work "toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".
South Korean President Moon Jae-in spoke by phone with Trump for 20 minutes late on Tuesday, but an official readout of the call made no mention of military exercises.
Seoul's presidential office told The Associated Press that it was trying to parse Trump's comments. "The country will welcome reducing the military exercises, as it could ease the decades-long tension on the Korean peninsula".
The fact that Trump and Kim "can sit together and have equal talks has important and positive meaning, and is creating a new history", he said in the statement.
"We actually have a new deal with South Korea in terms of the trade deal but we have to talk to many countries about trading us fairly".
"I hope - but am not yet confident - that (North Korea) will take steps that match the concessions Mr. Trump has already made by ending military exercises in South Korea and granting Mr. Kim legitimacy with this summit", Thomas Countryman, a former acting under secretary of state for arms control under President Barack Obama, told Reuters. Outside analysts believe the North objects to the drills because it must spend precious resources on its own war games and troop movements.
"At the same time, there needs to be a peace mechanism for the peninsula, to resolve North Korea's reasonable security concerns", he added.
"I said when I first started, why do the bombers come from Guam?" Then he said: "We will be stopping the war games, which will save us a tremendous amount of money unless and until we see the future negotiation is not going along like it should. Plus, I think it's very provocative". We did sanctions and all of the things that you would do.
Here's The Real Winner Of The Trump x Kim Summit
Rodman has been to North Korea five times since the basketball-loving Kim came to power, often as a guest of Kim. During that visit, North Korea released USA college student Otto Warmbier , who died shortly after his return.
US forces in South Korea were also apparently clueless as to the decision to suspend the military exercises.
"Here at the Pentagon, what they're telling us is, they will be in line with as soon as they figure out what, exactly, he's talking about", she said.
Purdue, who has lived in Singapore and China as a businessman before his political career, said it would "be bad to throw on there any concession except for economic development" in negotiating the denuclearization of North Korea.
