In Martin's novels, the Age of Heroes is a period of history after the Dawn Age, in which the First Men crossed the land bridge into Westeros and came into contact with the illusive Children of the Forest, according to the fan-powered Game of Thrones Wiki. Martin has offered another clue about the story by pitching his own suggestion for what the show ought to be called. He thinks the show should be titled The Long Night and also stated that one of the five potential Thrones pilots "has been shelved, [he is] given to understand".
In some sense, it is an interesting choice to visit that era, since in many ways it must end similarly to Game of Thrones with the coming of the White Walkers. All of the successor shows we've been developing have been prequels, as I have mentioned before.
As has been previously reported, HBO has given the green light to a pilot for the first of several prospective Game of Thrones prequels.
