Trump traveled to Singapore from Canada, where he a meeting with other world leaders.

Hours earlier, a jet carrying Kim landed. "It's my honor. We will have a terrific relationship", the president told reporters as he and Kim sat across from one another moments after the historic handshake on a stage bedecked with United States and North Korean flags".

"From a US perspective, Trump has made clear he hasn't prepared for the meeting, so he may say things to Kim that his advisers will want to walk back later if they are able to figure out what he's told Kim", Goldgeier said. The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

"The discussions between the United States and North Korea are ongoing and have moved more quickly than expected", the White House said in a statement.

During another photo-op before the two leaders began a working lunch, no independent journalists were allowed into the pool. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about internal deliberations and insisted on anonymity.

Trump said on May 24 he was scrapping it after threats by North Korea to pull out over what it saw as confrontational remarks by US officials demanding unilateral disarmament.

Trump's North Korean counterpart had also attended a meeting with PM Lee at the Istana yesterday for a half-hour session.

North Korea has previously said it was willing to discuss denuclearization, but experts have expressed concern over the varying definitions of the term held by Washington and Pyongyang.

Part of the interest in Tuesday's summit is simply because Kim has had limited appearances on the world stage.

Pompeo says North Korea could get ‘unique’ security guarantees
The article also stresses the need for confidentiality - meaning Trump will have to resist tweeting the minutes of the meeting. Kim, one of the president's top trade advisers, Peter Navarro, said there was "a special place in hell" for leaders like Mr.

In Trump's and Kim's meeting on Tuesday, reporters were allowed access for just a few minutes at the beginning.

In the hours before the summit began, Trump expressed optimism about prospects for the first-ever meeting of sitting US and North Korean leaders, while US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo injected a note of caution whether Kim would prove to be honest about his willingness to denuclearise.

The Swiss-educated leader, who is believed to be 34, has not left his isolated country since taking office in 2011, apart from visiting China and the South Korean side of the border Demilitarised Zone, which separates the two Koreas.

It's unclear what Trump and Kim might decide Tuesday. But many say this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Kim to build his program and given that the weapons are seen as the major guarantee to his holding onto unchecked power. Past nuclear deals have crumbled over North Korea's reluctance to open its doors to outsiders.

Trump predicted earlier Monday that the summit could "work out very nicely" as officials from both countries sought to narrow differences on how to end a nuclear standoff on the Korean peninsula. Today's a great day for everybody - Singapore, Tokyo, China, everything.
