Trade dispute has Canadian MPs standing together against US President Donald Trump

Leaders pose for family

The outburst against Trudeau, and by association the other G7 members, is only the latest incident in which Trump has clashed with America's closest allies, even as he has had warm words for autocrats like Kim and Russia's Vladimir Putin.

Nevertheless, Trump appears determined to upend the trade relationship, insisting that the U.S.is the loser, and has demanded that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) be renegotiated or abandoned.

Navarro took Kudlow's comments one step further, telling Fox News' Chris Wallace that "there's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door ... And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference".

"The world as we know it, namely the USA -led rules-based multilateralism, is now in serious danger of unraveling, as illustrated at the G7 meeting", said Erik Nielsen, chief economist at Unicredit Bank.

Mr. Pompeo praised the G-7 nations for their help getting North Korea talks set up.

Trudeau's itinerary was marked "personal" and he was not in the House of Commons.

United States won’t discuss North Korea’s human rights records at summit
Kim is expected to stay at the St Regis hotel and Trump at the Shangri-La, both in the Tanglin area in downtown Singapore . Donald Trump had previously referred to the North Korean leader as a "madman with nuclear weapons".

Trump had initially roiled the waters by saying Russian Federation - expelled from what had been the G-8 after its annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula - should have been allowed to participate.

While leaders thought Trump may not agree to the climate charter, they had hoped the USA would at least consider signing off on the ocean agreement.

On trade, she said multilateral action was the way forward, not unilateral action against one's partners.

The G7 communique said the leaders of seven of the most powerful countries in the world agreed on the need for "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade" and the importance of fighting protectionism.

The other countries at the G-7 summit, however, rallied to Mr. Trudeau's support.

While making no direct criticism of Mr Trump, she left no doubt that European Union nations will impose counter-measures on USA goods in response.

"We've got to find a way still to find ways to keep these discussions going", Yussuff said on the phone from Regina, adding that labour groups are glad the main parties all plan to defend Canada's quota system on dairy and poultry, which American negotiators have targeted. But it is something that we absolutely will do.

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around".

'The prime minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the president, ' Trudeau's office said in a statement released on Twitter, which added Trudeau remained focused on what was accomplished at the two-day summit in Quebec. He didn't specify what he considered false about Trudeau's statements. Noting he and other US lawmakers have pressed for the better part of a year for Canada to loosen its rules to allow more American milk to flow north of the border, he said: "They have not moved off their protectionist policy when it comes to dairy".

A boxing enthusiast who dons his gloves to work off the stress of the job in his rare free time, the Canadian prime minister will have to carefully measure his punches against the United States leader, who publicly accused him of weakness and dishonesty after the meeting of the G7 nations in Quebec at the weekend.

The prime minister confirmed the European Union will impose "countermeasures" in response to the American tariffs, which she said "ultimately makes everyone poorer".
