A day after the G7 summit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel hit back at President Donald Trump's tariffs. Although an event entirely comprising of US allies, Trump had angered the majority of the leaders before he had even arrived, imposing trade tariffs on European and Canadian exports.

However, Merkel avoided giving a definitive answer to the question of whether Germany will stop seeing the USA as an "important partner".

"The withdrawal by tweet is, of course, sobering and a bit depressing as well", she told Germany's Anne Will talk show on Sunday evening.

"He learned", Trump said.

Later on Saturday, after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said all seven nations had signed a joint communique at the end of the summit, Trump angrily lashed out on Twitter, stating the US would not endorse the statement.

Mr Trump had already threatened to divide the G7, made up of the US, France, UK, Italy, Germany, Japan and Canada, when he suggested Russian Federation should be allowed to rejoin the group.

"I can not be part of an integration summit where there is one participant who in an article compared my strategy on homeland to the homeland understanding of the Nazis", Seehofer told reporters. At a press conference following the summit, Trudeau repeated his earlier description of United States trade tariffs as "insulting" and vowed retaliatory measures would come in July.

Although U.S. senators have warned that a spat risks launching a "trade war", the key factor behind Trump's apparent policy zigzag was a matter of his image ahead of a first ever meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this week, according to Trump's economic adviser Larry Kudlow.

On Saturday Trump called Trudeau "very dishonest and weak" in a tweet after Trudeau repeated criticisms of United States tariffs on imported steel and aluminium and Trump's trade policies in a news conference following the Group of Seven meeting in Quebec.

The president also commented on his relationship with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, saying he was surprised by Mr. Trudeau's post-summit comments. "Other states will surely follow", he said in a statement. Then you carry your eyes toward the border of the picture and spot French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May. "We stand by it and whoever leaves it and turns their back on it is showing inconsistency and lack of character".
