US Mexico and Canada to host 2026 World Cup

A united bid of the U.S., Canada and Mexico was awarded the right Wednesday to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A total of 200 delegates representing every country registered with Federation Internationale de Football Association cast their vote, selecting the North American bid 134 to 65 over a bid from Morocco, with one voting for neither bid. North America's bid won the vote in the first round, and with surprising ease: 134 votes to Morocco's 65.

In March, B.C. Premier John Horgan said he was not willing to write a "blank cheque" to have Vancouver host soccer matches for the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

A spokesperson said: "We congratulate the USA, Canada and Mexico on winning the bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup".

Team Canada player and Whitecaps forward Alphonso Davies shares his story of being welcomed with open arms by Canadians and explains that he knows the people of North America will do the same for the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ if the United Bid wins the vote. Under the United Bid proposal, the list of host cities for the world's most watched sporting event likely will include two or three in Canada, three in Mexico and 10 in the United States. It will be the first World Cup since the 2002 edition in South Korea and Japan in which multiple countries will host. Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup, though it was the site of the 2015 Women's World Cup.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in October both Blatter and ex-UEFA head Michel Platini, who was also suspended following an ethics investigation, would be welcome at the World Cup as "old friends" of the Russian president.

Two Miami residents - newly-elected U.S. Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro and Donna Shalala, a U.S. Soccer board member - were deeply involved in the bid process.

Which cities will host the World Cup matches? Canada, Mexico and the US are home to a combined 491 million people and two of the world's biggest media markets.
