With Kennedy Gone, Roberts Will Be the Supreme Court’s Swing Vote

Prez Trump to move quickly on SC nominee
Justice Anthony Kennedy's retirement from the Supreme Court has put the Senate on the cusp of an all-out war over his replacement and thrust an unexpected and hotly contested issue into the spotlight less than five months away from the midterm elections.
He plans to begin interviewing possible candidates Monday but may meet with some this weekend in New Jersey. Not only is Trump expanding the conservative Supreme Court majority, he is also moving at record pace to fill the federal appeals courts with young conservative judges who will preside for decades.
Ms. Severino said that makes Justice Roberts something of a "wild card" on the question of whether to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that established the constitutional right to an abortion.
Trump said shortly after Kennedy's announcement Wednesday he will start the search "immediately" and consult a list of candidates he compiled two years ago, before he was even elected president.
But picking an ultra-conservative as his nominee would carry risk because Trump would have to rely on some moderate Republicans to win approval in the U.S. Senate, where his fellow Republicans have a narrow majority.
The president originally said he was considering a list of 25 candidates.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez said Kennedy's retirement should "remove all doubt" about the importance of November's midterms, while outsiders began to debate how Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a NY Democrat who urged Republicans on Wednesday "to follow the rule they set in 2016" and "not to consider a Supreme Court justice in an election year", should direct his caucus.
Trump will also discuss the vacancy with McConnell and Sen.
Other women on the list include Joan Larsen, who serves on the federal appeals court in Cincinnati and previously served as a Michigan Supreme Court Justice, and Allison Eid, who serves on the federal appeals court based in Denver and previously served as a Colorado Supreme Court justice.
"Sen. Murkowski has stood with us before", she said, pointing to the senators votes against overturning the Affordable Care Act.
"I may have two of them come up, like the old days, to Bedminster", Trump said, referring to the staff and Cabinet interviews he held there in late 2016 during the presidential transition.
Steve Aden, general counsel of Americans United for Life, said he expects the nominee will be "somebody who reveres the Constitution like Gorsuch and Antonin Scalia".

Complicating the rescue will be the team's weakened condition after days without food, and potentially other health problems. The Brit trio are global experts in exploring underground systems and were sent "because they are the best" for the job.
"You see this over and over again and it's the usual rank speculation", Leo said. The Democrats are citing Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell's successful block of President Barack Obama's nominee to the court, Merrick Garland, in 2016.
He was among several senators who met Thursday with Trump at the White House.
White House aides said other names are in the mix as well.
Steven Law, president of the Senate Leadership Fund, a campaign group aligned with McConnell, said the group is running digital ads in 10 states that Trump won in 2016 where Democratic senators are now up for re-election.
If an originalist majority settles in for a long run on the Supreme Court, everyone can send thank-you notes to Harry Reid.
"He has been a crucial vote in landmark reproductive rights cases", Northup said.
