Haiti suspends fuel price hike after protesters riot
In suspending the price hikes, Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant on Saturday emphasized that "violence and democracy are fundamentally incompatible".
The demonstrations began after the Commerce Ministry and Economic Ministry issued a joint statement announcing an increase of 38 percent to 51 percent for gasoline, diesel and kerosene.

A spokesman for US carrier American Airlines Group Inc said it had canceled three out of seven round trip flights scheduled to stop in Port-au-Prince on Sunday. Only a few miles into the approximately 30-mile journey, the group, which includes middle school- and high school-age children, encountered individuals demanding payment for access to the roadway, according to McFarlin. A local colleague of McFarlin's rode ahead on a motorcycle and reported that the road ahead was filled with similar impromptu "checkpoints".
"They weren't government or police", McFarlin says. "Just people taking advantage of the situation".
Youth groups and missionaries from an array of U.S churches are also stranded in the Caribbean nation, unable to make it safely to the airport for departure. It's "a little bit more calm now", she said.
Some flights from Haiti resumed Sunday after protests over a proposed increase in fuel prices ordered by the government caused airlines to stop service to and from the island.
The capital Port-au-Prince and its surrounding areas have stood paralysed since Friday afternoon, with major routes blocked by barricades, some made of burning tires, and some protesters calling for a revolution in the impoverished country. "So this hurts us", she said.
"Mission of Hope is thankful for our friends and family in neighboring villages, who have been so encouraging and supportive", it said.
More than 120 Americans, however, are sheltering in a Port-au-Prince hotel where protesters tried to set the building on fire and get past security.
