Haiti suspends fuel price hike after protesters riot

In suspending the price hikes, Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant on Saturday emphasized that "violence and democracy are fundamentally incompatible".

The demonstrations began after the Commerce Ministry and Economic Ministry issued a joint statement announcing an increase of 38 percent to 51 percent for gasoline, diesel and kerosene.

A mission group from central Kentucky that has been working with schools and children is stranded in Haiti.

A spokesman for US carrier American Airlines Group Inc said it had canceled three out of seven round trip flights scheduled to stop in Port-au-Prince on Sunday. Only a few miles into the approximately 30-mile journey, the group, which includes middle school- and high school-age children, encountered individuals demanding payment for access to the roadway, according to McFarlin. A local colleague of McFarlin's rode ahead on a motorcycle and reported that the road ahead was filled with similar impromptu "checkpoints".

"They weren't government or police", McFarlin says. "Just people taking advantage of the situation".
