CDC recalls Del Monte vegetable trays

CDC Reports 212 Confirmed Cases of Cyclospora in Midwest

The recalled products, which affected people in Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin as of Thursday, have a "Best If Enjoyed By" date of June 17, 2018. Seven people were hospitalized but no deaths have been reported. As many as 54 cases have also been reported in Minnesota, along with a handful in Iowa and MI.

The FDA is investigating a multi-state outbreak of an intestinal infection that has resulted in "frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements" and has been linked to consumption of produce contained within Del Monte vegetables trays.

Symptoms related to the outbreak began on May 14. "The recalled products were distributed to: Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Demond's, Sentry, Potash, Meehan's, Country Market, Food Max Supermarket and Peapod in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin", according to the FDA recall.

People who got illness range from ages 13 to 79 years old. The company is also recalling these veggie trays in the state of Wisconsin, as well as 28 oz. veggie trays which include broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery and dill dip, which were distributed to IL and Indiana. According to the Food and Drug Administration, symptoms of cyclosporiasis include severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and fatigue.

What are the Symptoms of Cyclosporiasis? Vomiting, headache, fever, body aches and flu-like symptoms can also occur.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis, a single-celled protozoa most commonly transmitted on produce contaminated with human fecal matter, particularly from tropical or subtropical regions where the parasite is native.
