A number of people, mostly government workers, were trapped in the ministry on what had been a normal business day.

Witnesses said the security forces launched a counterterror operation and engaged in an hour-long battle with the militants before ending the siege and killing all the three armed attackers.

At least 13 people were wounded on Saturday in a suicide auto bombing near Somalia's presidential palace and another blast outside a police station close by in the capital, the emergency services said.

"Al Shabaab remotely exploded the second vehicle after they got out of it", he said, adding that a heavy exchange of fire continued at the occupied building. The group was blamed for the October truck bombing that killed more than 500 people in the deadliest attack in the country's history.
