At least 9 killed in attack on Somalia's interior ministry

A number of people, mostly government workers, were trapped in the ministry on what had been a normal business day.

Witnesses said the security forces launched a counterterror operation and engaged in an hour-long battle with the militants before ending the siege and killing all the three armed attackers.

At least 13 people were wounded on Saturday in a suicide auto bombing near Somalia's presidential palace and another blast outside a police station close by in the capital, the emergency services said.

India beats England in 3rd T20, wins series 2-1
Some poor bowling from Indian pacers, who either sprayed the ball or bowled too short, helped England in making a bright start. The all-rounder was hit for 22 runs in his first over by Roy but he showed good composure to bounce back in his next three.

The interior ministry compound is located near the parliament headquarters and presidential palace.

Three gunmen were believed to be holed up inside the ministry, police said. The death toll could rise, Col. Ahmed Mohamed said.

"Al Shabaab remotely exploded the second vehicle after they got out of it", he said, adding that a heavy exchange of fire continued at the occupied building. The group was blamed for the October truck bombing that killed more than 500 people in the deadliest attack in the country's history.

The current parliamentary system will end on Monday after constitutional changes were approved in a 2017 referendum. Some 3,077 army soldiers were also dismissed, as well as 1,949 air force personnel and 1,126 from the naval forces.

"We condemn these heinous terrorist attacks aiming to undermine the security and stability of Somalia, wish God's mercy upon those who lost their lives, convey our condolences to their families and wish speedy recovery to the wounded", the statement added.

Abdulkadir Abdirahman Aden, head of the Amin ambulance service, said his team carried five dead bodies and more than 17 wounded people from near the scene. Another blast went off outside a police station nearby.

Militant group al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. Al-Shabab also has claimed responsibility for this attack.
