Jacob Zuma's son, Duduzane, charged with corruption, granted bail

Duduzane Zuma

The son of former President Zuma faced a throng of journalists as he walked in and out of the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Johannesburg, shackled and escorted by law enforcement officers.

Local news agencies said lawyer Rudi Krause confirmed Duduzane was processed at the Johannesburg Central police station where he surrendered his passport as part of his bail agreement.

He has been charged over involvement in a bribe allegedly offered to former deputy Finance minister Mcebisi Jonas by the Guptas.

Starbucks, citing environment, is ditching plastic straws
A number of local governments have recently passed legislation restricting the use and distribution of plastic straws. Several other USA cities have already implemented similar bans, or have proposed legislation in the works.

The case has been postponed to 24 January 2019 and a bail of 100,000 rand ($7,4000; $5,400) was granted.

His court appearance marks a dramatic turnaround from Jacob Zuma's nine years in power, when corruption allegations involving top officials were rarely investigated.

Zuma's shadow is looming large over the Ramaphosa era.

'Strawless in Seattle': City bans plastic straws, utensils at restaurants, bars
California's Legislature is considering statewide restrictions, but not an outright ban, on single-use plastic straws. Flexible plastic straws for customers who require them for medical reasons are exempt from the ban.

The allegation is that had he agreed, Mr Jonas would have used his position as finance minister to advance the Guptas' extensive business interests - an example of what became known in South Africa as state capture.

It is alleged that Duduzane was a party to the crime because he was present when the offer was made to Jonas by Gupta.

Previously, News24 reported that Duduzani Zuma was briefly detained at the OR Tambo International Airport after landing there on Thursday evening.

Drunk gulls found ‘stinking of alcohol’
Anyone who has any concerns for the welfare of a bird or any animal can contact the RSPCA's 24-hour helpline on 0300 1234 999. RSPCA officers Jo Daniel, Clara Scully and Paul Adams have collected several seagulls with the same symptoms in recent weeks.

He will be appearing at the Randburg Magistrates Court later this week‚ to face two charges of culpable homicide. The elder Zuma denies wrongdoing in that case, and his supporters say he is the victim of a politically motivated witch-hunt.
