Sanctions to remain until North Korea 'final' denuclearisation: Mike Pompeo

North Korea calls talks with the United States "regrettable" while Secretary of State Pompeo says the discussions were productive; former US ambassador to the U.N. Bill Richardson weighs in on 'Sunday Morning Futures'.

North Korea's latest comments, which came after Mr Pompeo said talks had made progress, are a reminder of the difficulties that previous USA administrations have had negotiating with the reclusive Stalinist state and suggest that Pyongyang may not agree to any rapid denuclearisation.

He added: "When we spoke to them about the scope of denuclearisation, they did not push back".

"The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know critics will try to minimize the work that we have achieved", he said.

"We had expected that the USA side would offer constructive measures that would help build trust based on the spirit of the leaders' summit. we were also thinking about providing reciprocal measures", it said.

Whether the North will set a concrete time line for denuclearization and honestly declare all of its facilities related to its nuclear and ballistic missile programs will be the very first and perhaps the most important steps for denuclearization, multiple senior officials at the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo have said. Trump in turn offered security guarantees to Pyongyang and pledged a halt to large-scale military drills with South Korea.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged North Korea on Sunday to replicate Vietnam in forging a new relationship with the United States, much like Hanoi has done five decades after the Vietnam War against the U.S. ended.

It said the North had raised the issue of formally ending the Korean War, which concluded with an armistice and not a peace treaty, but the USA came up with a variety of "conditions and excuses" to delay a declaration. Pompeo came to Tokyo on Saturday night after finishing his two-day tour to Pyongyang earlier in the day.

The same journey took six hours before pumps lowered the water level. "The operation is being supervised by the Thai authorities". On Saturday morning, the Thai Navy posted photos of letters the group had written to their family and the outside world.

The North's statement, coming so soon after Pompeo's trip, was sure to fuel growing skepticism in the United States over how serious Kim is about giving up his nuclear arsenal.

Sarah Clarke, reporting from South Korea's capital, Seoul, said that North Korea appeared to be unhappy following the high-level talks.

"The North has never seen denuclearization in a vacuum, but as part of a larger package and something that's considered only after there is a peace regime", said Kim. It wasn't my language; it was the language of Chairman Kim. "I am determined to achieve the commitment that President Trump made, and I'm counting on chairman Kim to be determined to follow through on the commitment that he made".

"But a rushed summit and demands that NK denuclearize in short order or else is not a serious test of diplomacy", Haass tweeted.

At the same time the USA state department was forced to deny reports Mr Pompeo gave Kim Jong Un a CD of Elton John's Rocket Man - a playful reference to Donald Trump's nickname for the North Korean leader.

"There will be things that take place along the way that help achieve the security assurances that the North Koreans need".

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, reacting to the provocative statement from North Korea, said that if Washington's demands were "gangster-like", then the world is a gangster.

Unlike his previous visits, which have been one-day affairs during which he has met Kim Jong-un, Pompeo spent the night at a government guesthouse in Pyongyang and did not see the North Korean leader, although United States officials had suggested such a meeting was expected.

US intelligence officials earlier told Reuters Pompeo wanted to agree on at least an initial list of nuclear sites and an inventory that could be checked against available intelligence.

It is a marked contrast to the mutual threats and mounting fears of previous year, instead raising hopes of reaching a deal over North Korea's arsenal, which include nuclear bombs and missiles capable of reaching the U.S. mainland.

"But the economic sanctions are a different kettle of fish altogether. the world will see continued enforcement actions by the United States in the days and weeks ahead", Pompeo said.

Officials from the two sides would meet next week in Panmunjom, on the border between the two Koreas, to discuss the return of the remains of roughly 7,000 US soldiers missing since the 1950-53 Korean War.

There was speculation that during his trip to Pyongyang, Pompeo would bring back the remains of some American soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War.

"The issues the USA side insisted on at the talks are all roots of troubles, which the previous administrations also had insisted on to disrupt the dialogue processes, stoke the distrust and increase the danger of war", the statement read.

At one point, Pompeo's use of the phrase FFVD raised concern among Japanese diplomats because it sounded less specific about what the North will actually be obliged to do.

Trump’s trade war: what is it and which products are affected?
Analysts say China is unlikely to budge on those plans, which it sees as crucial for developing its huge economy. Beijing hit back on Friday with tariffs worth $34bn and has said it will match Trump's $50bn threat.

Mr Pompeo also sought to dispel suggestions the Trump administration had backed down from demanding the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of the North's nuclear weapons.
