Boris Johnson resigns in major Brexit blow to UK PM Theresa May

David Davis

Conservative leading body the 1922 Committee had a meeting to decide the Prime Minister's fate following the resignations.

It comes as the Tory government tries to get a handle of infighting over how best to deal with Brexit.

Brexit has been a source of intense confusion and uncertainty pretty much since the vote got passed back in 2016, but this week has been manic even by normal standards.

Like Mr Gove - who infamously made a rival bid for the leadership after the referendum - Mr Johnson has always been suspected of aiming to lead the party and be prime minister.

Under Conservative Party rules, a confidence vote in a leader can be triggered if 48 lawmakers from May's Conservative Party request one.

Sir Graham refused to say whether he had received any such letters.

Rescuers begin 'challenging' final push to free last five from Thai cave
Rescuers have quickened the speed of the latest rescues by two hours, learning and adapting from the last two days of rescues. Four of the trapped Thai cave boys were rescued over the weekend, and on Monday, four more were transported to the hospital.

But as Foreign Secretary in May's government, he was prone to gaffes and criticized for not being on top of his brief.

Labour MP Chuka Umunna, a strong supported of the campaign, said: "Brexit is turning into an unholy and undeliverable mess".

The prime minister was given backing by senior Tory figures from the Brexit and Remain sides as Downing Street tried to contain the rebellion by up to 80 members of the European Research Group of hard Brexiteers who attended last night's meeting.

Mrs May is expected to use a Commons statement to tell MPs that the strategy agreed on at Chequers is the "right Brexit" for Britain.

"I doubt the prime minister will survive long", a member of the Conservative Party's pro-Brexit wing told Business Insider yesterday.

"The government now has a song to sing".

"The trouble is that I have practised the words over the weekend and I find they stick in the throat".

It said May now faces "the spectre of a leadership challenge", but it was "possible that after a period of resignations and political blood-letting, the Conservative Party will fall behind the prime minister".

Mrs May has now appointed Dominic Raab and Jeremy Hunt to replace Mr Davis and Mr Johnson.

Davis did not urge other ministers to resign, saying he was in a unique position because the Brexit secretary's job is to sell the government's policy.

The Guardian newspaper quoted an unnamed Conservative MP saying the resignations would continue in protest against her plan to keep strong economic ties with the European Union - dubbed the Chequers plan after her country retreat where it was agreed last week.

The "common rulebook" plan "hands control of large swathes of our economy to the European Union and is certainly not returning control of our laws in any real sense", he wrote to Mrs May.
