Ten killed in Turkish train accident

Passenger train derails in northwest Turkey

Two train drivers were summoned for questioning by police on Monday over the accident, state news agency Anadolu reported.

Transport minister Ahmet Arslan said seven other trains had used the route earlier on Sunday, but the rain caused "extraordinary swelling".

The train was heading to Istanbul, with 362 passengers and six crew members.

Over 100 ambulances have been sent to the scene, TRT Haber said, quoting Health Ministry Undersecretary Eyup Gumus.

The first television pictures showed several train carriages laying on their sides, and shocked injured being taken away on stretchers as rescue workers picked through the wreckage.

"The accident happened because of adverse weather conditions", Tekirdag governor Mehmet Ceylan told the NTV channel.

A passenger train has derailed in northwest Turkey, leading to deaths and injuries, according to local media reports.

The train came off the rails after heavy rain and a landslide on to the tracks, officials said.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's office said he had received information from the ministers of transport and interior about the incident, and sent condolences for those killed.

In a statement, Erdogan said the train accident is being investigated thoroughly. The head of Turkey's emergency and disaster services said the muddy area was hard to reach.
