After a quiet opening World Cup game against Tunisia, there was speculation Sterling would be dropped for the following group match against Panama. Yet, anybody who observed England's quarter-final win over Sweden without any bias would tell you how influential Sterling was to England's gameplay.

Yet three in 43 and an appearance in the World Cup final?

However, blasting such abuses and cheap comments, Neville has now praised Sterling's performance and insisted the player is being targetted without any reason.

Ex-England right-back and coach Gary Neville blasted the half-time treatment of the 23-year-old on social media as "absolutely disgusting". "OK, we didn't have the cherry on the cake, the goal, where all of a sudden you're a hero, but it was a brilliant performance".

On Sunday he moves on to Helsinki to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for long-awaited talks on neutral territory. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has granted permission for the blimp to fly above the square between 9.30am and 11.30am.

Somewhat unfairly, Sterling has been on the wrong end of criticism from some over his performances at the World Cup, where he is yet to score - despite finding the net 23 times for Manchester City last season.

England manager Gareth Southgate has launched a staunch defence of Raheem Sterling ahead of the World Cup semi-final against Croatia.

Every player is in the form of their life: Jordan Pickford is Gordon Banks, Harry Maguire is Bobby Moore, Harry Kane is Geoff Hurst.

"We as a country are united and behind the team".

Meanwhile, ignoring all the abuses and taunts, Sterling has applauded the support of English fans in Russian Federation.

Today, I want to thank all that have and continue to support @England as a team, this has helped us achieve what can only be described as a dream!

England take on Croatia on Wednesday for a place in the World Cup final against either France or Belgium. Sterling has done pretty much everything right, bar scoring, and England are a better side with the Manchester City winger in the team.

To drop Sterling may create uncertainty in the England camp and may lead to Southgate having to subtle changes to his play-style and tactics which may disrupts the rest of the team's form.
