Police officer harasses woman for wearing Puerto Rican flag shirt

Although Puerto Ricans are USA citizens, they must register in one of the 50 states to vote in presidential elections. In the video, an older, unidentified white man, is seen provoking Irizarry and aggressively asking why she is wearing a Puerto Rican flag shirt in America.

Mia Irizarry who was celebrating her 24th birthday at the park last month, was approached by a man, a park police officer, who repeatedly asked her as to why she was wearing a sleeveless Puerto Rico flag shirt?

"You're not going to change us", Trybus added.

'Are you educated?' Trybus asks her in the clip.

The woman remained calm and polite throughout the confrontation, calling the man "sir".

"All people are welcome in the Forest Preserves of Cook County and no one should feel unsafe while visiting our preserves", the agency tweeted Monday. The unresponsive officer seen in the video was reassigned to desk duty pending his conduct review.

More officers eventually arrived and arrested the man, who was described as drunk. In the video, the woman can be heard asking the officer, "I do not feel comfortable with him here; is there anything you can do?"

The video, posted on Facebook, has been viewed more than 1.2 million times.

"The United States of America is a nation that was built and thrives on diversity".

When the man again tries to get in her face, her brother arrives and intervenes.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello shared his viewpoint on the video via Twitter on Monday: "Today a video surfaced of an undignified event in which a Puerto Rican woman was brutally harassed by a bigot while an officer did not interfere".

'That officer did absolutely nothing he did absolutely zero, ' she says in the clip.

Trybus was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct, according to the Forest Preserves. She tells the officer she is "highly uncomfortable", however, the officer appears to turn away and walk in the other direction. Everything initially went well; there was a group of people in the area Irizarry had rented, but they politely moved away when they were told Irizarry's group had a permit for the area.

'People have just as much right to be here as you do, ' she can be heard telling him in the clip.

'He failed to deescalate the situation and therefore did not ensure a citizen's safety'.

'We will be looking into this incident as our offices in DC are in contact with local and state authorities, demanding that this officer be expelled from the police force, ' Rosello tweeted on Tuesday.

"This is not the America we all believe in", he said.

The man proceeds to ask Irizarry whether she is a United States citizen and Irizarry replies that she is.
