Trump's SCOTUS nomination on Monday follows his successful pick of Justice Neil Gorsuch last year

Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy is retiring, giving US President Donald Trump to nominate a replacement that takes the top court further right. It's the same court that produced three current high court justices.

He previously worked for Kenneth Starr, the independent counsel who investigated Democratic former President Bill Clinton in the 1990s.

Although Trump said during the campaign he would appoint anti-abortion judges who would overturn Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, he said he would not ask candidates about whether they think the ruling should be reversed.

"I'm getting very close to making a final decision", Trump said.

"I'll be deciding tonight or tomorrow sometime by 12 o'clock", he said.

All four federal judges have the endorsement of major Republican legal groups, most importantly the powerful Federalist Society. Before joining the federal court, Hardiman practiced law in Pittsburgh.

Trump planned to announce his pick Monday night.

President Trump is set to announce his second Supreme Court nominee. The ads, costing a total of $1.4 million to run, will feature biographical information about the nominee and will be aimed at red state Democrats, including newly elected Sen. I think they'd be fine justices of the Supreme Court. Kennedy, a 1988 appointee of President Ronald Reagan, was the most unpredictable.

On the past quarter century's most consequential and controversial issues, from racial preferences to religious freedom to reproductive rights, Kennedy often bridged the gap between the court's liberals and conservatives.
