Turkey fires thousands of public servants in anti-terror purge

A total of 18,632 Turkish state employees have been dismissed from their posts by a statutory decree under Turkey's state of emergency over their links with terror groups, according to the official gazette Sunday.

The government has defended the measures imposed under the state of emergency in place since July 2016, saying they were needed to eradicate the influence of Gulen from Turkish society.

About 1,052 people, including judicial candidates and civil servants were dismissed from the justice ministry.

Turkey declared a state of emergency following the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2018, organized by the followers of FETÖ and its USA -based leader Fethullah Gülen that resulted in the deaths of almost 250 people and more than 2,200 injuries.

Prosecutors in Istanbul issued arrest warrants for 271 soldiers, 122 of whom are still on active duty, as part of a probe into followers of US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen in the Turkish armed forces, news agency Anadolu reported. Gulen has denied any involvement in the coup.

With same decree, 12 unions, 3 newspapers and one television network were closed.

Mr Erdogan will be sworn in on Monday under a new executive presidency after his outright victory in the June 24 elections.

Critics say Mr Erdogan is using the extra powers permitted under emergency rule to target opponents, while human rights defenders have said the purges are arbitrary.
