Federer, Nadal close in on dream final
Nishikori and John Isner are both through to the quarter-finals for the first time.
The 20-time Grand Slam victor is aiming for a 13th Wimbledon semi-final and to extend his record for the most last four appearance at the All England Club in the Open Era, having taken sole ownership of the record from American Jimmy Connors during his 2017 title run.
Deploying his huge serve to lethal effect, Anderson roared back to leave the champion's title bid in tatters thanks to a barrage of 28 aces and 65 winners. 'Against Anderson he has won all four matches and never dropped a set, so I expect him to comfortably get through. Federer ended up with more points won than Anderson in this match, but ultimately the difference came down to two unforced errors. But that turned out to be the least of his worries.
Anderson's attempt to serve out the set was not without drama but, though Federer brought up a break-back point, a searing cross-court backhand saved it and a forehand into the left corner secured a decider.
Father-of-four Federer hopes to be back for a 21st straight shot at the title in 2019.

In the last eight tomorrow, Federer will face eighth seed Kevin Anderson, one of a number of players enjoying a career-best Wimbledon after a 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 7-6 (7/4) victory over Gael Monfils.
Anderson took his opportunity, despite having to save three break points, to seal it in majestic fashion with an ace.
The final set lasted 90 minutes, and it was captivating stuff. Anderson held for 5-all, broke to 6-5 with a violent return victor off a 97 miles per hour second serve, then staved off three break points and closed the set with a 133 miles per hour ace.
Anderson needed four more booming serves to reach a first Wimbledon semi-final, and he found them.

But Federer offered a contrasting view in his media conference following a 6-0 7-5 6-4 fourth-round win over Adrian Mannarino on Monday.
Federer, the No 1 seed, had been widely expected to cruise through to the final before facing the likes of Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic.
