Wimbledon: I gave it my all against Federer, says Anderson

12 July 2018, 12:04 | Henrietta Morgan

Federer wasted a match point during the 2-6, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4, 13-11, match. Not only has he yet to drop a set through four matches at the All-England Club this year, but he hasn't had his serve broken, and it wasn't until his last match against Adrian Mannarino that he faced his first break point.

Federer suffered his earliest exit at Wimbledon since a shock second-round defeat against Sergiy Stakhovsky in 2013.

In the semifinals, Anderson will face the victor of the matchup between American John Isner, the No. 9 seed, and Canada's Milos Raonic, the No. 13 seed.

Kevin Anderson is moving on at Wimbledon.

Federer took the first two sets and then the South African returned strongly to take the third and fourth sets.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic shrugged off a second-set slump to reach a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time since 2016 by beating Kei Nishikori 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Defending champion Federer will play in the unfamiliar surroundings of Wimbledon's No. 1 Court as he takes on eighth-seeded Kevin Anderson.

The two traded winning the first 22 games in the fifth set, before Anderson broke Federer's serve and took a 12-11 lead in a match that exceeded four hours.

And his great rival Federer, despite the fact he will be 37 when the next Wimbledon comes around, allayed any fears that he might hang up his racket sooner rather than later.

Federer found himself scheduled on Court One having been ousted from his usual Centre Court domain for the first time in three years.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Joaquin Niemann fires a closing 64 to jump 26 spots to a tie for fourth at 12 under. Kraft (70) wound up second, while Jason Kokrak (67) and Brandt Snedeker (64) tied for third at 13 under.

Anderson stayed cool and sealed victory on his first match point with a powerful first serve which Federer could only return into the tramlines.

"You are reluctant to write Roger off - just the way that he moves around the court and he stays injury free", said the Australian, who won the title in 1987.

He then let rip at Ramos for failing to sanction Nishikori for a similar act in the fourth set. Anderson held for 5-all, broke to 6-5 with a violent return victor off a 97 miles per hour second serve, then staved off three break points and closed the set with a 133 miles per hour ace. Every set won by Anderson required an extra game to determine the victor.

Federer couldn't convert a break point at 3-4 and as the final set headed into extra time a lone voice in the crowd, mindful of England's imminent World Cup semi-final against Croatia, shouted out "Hurry up I need to watch the football".

The two players then held their serves brilliantly in the fifth and decisive set, until Anderson broke Federer in the 23rd game to go up 12-11.
