A homeless artist who does not have arms stabbed a tourist by grabbing a pair of scissors with his feet, police say.

According to the Miami Herald, Crenshaw is a popular fixture in South Beach, where he is known for painting canvas using his feet on the Lincoln Road Mall.

Coronado, a tourist visiting from Chicago, and a friend told police that Coronado had only asked for directions before the alleged attack, the Miami New Times reports.

It is unclear when Crenshaw chose to come to Miami Beach, but a 2011 profile of the homeless man in the Miami New Times noted that he was born in Alabama and lived a transient life, moving from place-to-place with his mother.

Cindy Barrientos, who was travelling with Mr Coronado, described the attacker as a homeless man with no arms to officers.

Police found Mr Coronado bleeding from his left arm and he was taken to hospital for treatment, the Miami Herald reported.

Crenshaw was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, Miami Beach police said.

Crenshaw, however, says his actions were in self-defense.

Police said there were no indications that Crenshaw was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident.

Crenshaw has an extensive criminal past, including battery of law enforcement officers, according to the Miami Beach Police Department. His court date will be on July18.
