The Isner-Anderson match was the first Grand Slam men's semifinal to go past 6-all in the deciding set since the 2013 French Open, and the first at Wimbledon since 2001. Isner took the second set tiebreaker 7-6 (5), punctuating it with an ace.
Anderson will play again in the final on Sunday - hopefully there, a victor will be decided in four sets or less. On the pro tour, Isner held the decided edge in their matches with an 8-3 record.
The ball was in Kevin Anderson's court when he defeated Roger Federer on Wednesday to book a semifinal spot in the 2018 Wimbledon. However, Melichar and Peschke won the next two games to seal it. Brian Norton was the last South African man to reach the final in 1921.
Given the length of this match, it may well prove hard for Djokovic and Nadal to complete their contest on Friday. Djokovic owns 12 Slam trophies, three from Wimbledon.
Isner was trying to end the longest major title drought - 58 majors - for USA men in tennis history.
