Trump says May is doing Brexit wrong, threatening U.S. trade deal

ITVITV Good Morning Britain Susanna Reid forced to intervene in Sadiq Khan and Trump debate
Trump issued scathing criticism of May's Brexit strategy.
In a statement ahead of Trump's arrival, she said the visit would focus on trade and strengthening defense and security ties, saying there was no stronger alliance than Britain's "special relationship with the U.S".
Shortly after he told North Atlantic Treaty Organisation he didn't think the Brexit deal Mrs May was offering was the one people wanted, he continued to lay into the British prime minister, even backing her former foreign secretary Boris Johnson to be a successor.
Trump's remarks came as he prepared to meet May for a working lunch at Chequers.
As he began a four-day visit to Britain on Thursday, Trump, a major supporter of Brexit, told The Sun that he had advised May to go about leaving the European Union in a different way but was ignored.
He also said that he "would have done it much differently", referring to the Brexit plan.
"I think he has done a bad job on crime, if you look, all of the frightful things going on there, with all of the crime that is being brought in", he said.
"I'm just saying I think he would be a great prime minister", Trump told The Sun. And that is fine.
It's a blow May doesn't need as she tries to sell her Brexit strategy to Tory conservatives, many of whom say it doesn't secure British independence from the European Union.
"It was not the deal that was in the referendum".
It comes just days after Mr Trump declined to say whether Mrs May should remain in post, said he had "always liked" Boris Johnson, who quit as foreign secretary over the Chequers agreement, and described the United Kingdom as being in "turmoil".
"I also represent a lot of people in Europe because a lot of people from Europe are in the United States", he said.
Following the departure of senior figures, including foreign minister Boris Johnson and Brexit minister David Davis, the political atmosphere is febrile. And more than 50,000 people have signed up to demonstrate in London on July 13, Reutersreported. Just a week after his inauguration, Prime Minister Theresa May invited the president for a state visit, the type of event that normally includes glittering horse-drawn carriages and a state dinner hosted by the monarch.
After landing at Stansted Airport, the US President is set to fly to the US Ambassador's residence by helicopter, where he will stay the night. Separately, his wife, Melania, will visit war veterans and schoolchildren in a London visit accompanied by Philip May, the prime minister's husband. "Deals that take too long are never good ones", he added.
The agenda for Trump and May on Friday includes discussion on relations with Russian Federation, ahead of a summit in Finland on Monday between Trump and President Vladimir Putin.
Writer Owen Jones has also been a fundamental organiser in the protest, urging his more than 735,000 Twitter followers to stand together against the president.
This protest has been organised by the Stop Trump movement, which is a group of organisations and individuals who first joined forces in 2017 to protest Mr Trump's original planned visit to the UK.
Trump, as he has before, criticized London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, as having "done a very bad job on terrorism".
Trump also criticised May in a press conference in Brussels following a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit there just before flying to London, casting doubt on whether she will deliver on British voters' intentions when they backed leaving the European Union in a 2016 referendum.
