US Southwest swelters with temps up to 120 forecast

A record-setting heat wave is expected to reach its peak Wednesday along with risky surf conditions in San Diego County, before temperatures cool slightly for the weekend.

The National Weather Service expects Monday's temperatures to peak the week-long heat wave in Central Texas.

The Wednesday high temperature record for Palm Springs - 119 degrees - is in jeopardy, as a relentless heat wave will hit the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley this week, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service said Waco reached 114 degrees around 5 p.m., beating the city's previous all-time record of 112 degrees set August 11, 1969.

High temperatures this month have played a role in the deaths of four people, according to county public health officials. The weather service said the warning for Utah's Dixie and Lake Powell regions will be in effect Tuesday through Thursday.

A high-pressure system moving over Southern California brought about thermometer readings in the mid-80s along the coast, and into the high 90s and the triple digits inland, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather agency uses a complicated formula that varies from region to region to declare an excessive heat warning, including close to record or record-breaking temperatures.

The NWS issued a High Surf Advisory beginning Monday at 8 a.m. and lasting through 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also urged people to stay out of the sun.
