Some 37 million people live with HIV today, and about 1.8 million new infections were recorded previous year.

Researchers have identified a promising new class of antibodies that protects against infection from HIV-1, the virus that causes AIDS.

Experts this week warned that the epidemic which has killed 35 million people so far may resurge because of political "apathy" and a resultant shortage of funding.

Nelson Mandela's grandson, Ndaba Mandela, was also part of the launch and told delegates that the MenStar Coalition would allow men to "finally fully participate in creating an HIV-free generation of the future".

Guardiola fielded a young side, particularly in defence, and says they will have learnt a lot from coming up against such quality. It's pre-season, it's really not important. "We don't think about that, we just try to make the best of it".

He said understanding the suffering of those inflicted with the disease and the ways they had been exposed to it was the most effective way of spreading awareness about the disease. UNAIDS estimates that £19.9 ($26.2bn) will be needed to fund the AIDS fight in 2020.
