Prince Harry joins Elton John to launch HIV campaign targeting men

On 24 July 2018, Deputy President Mabuza, in his capacity as Chairperson of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC), will share with conference delegates the process followed for the fifth South African National HIV Prevalence, Incidence, Behaviour and Communication Survey.

The slogan for this year's conference is "Breaking barriers, building bridges".

Actress Dame Elizabeth Taylor addressed the last Aids conference held in Amsterdam 26 years ago, and last night her grandson, Quinn Tivey, and granddaughters Naomi and Laela Wilding continued the family tradition.

"To be an LGBT person in Russian Federation is very hard", he added.

"And it's holding us back, and until we can get that. idea out of our heads that gay people are lesser, then I'm afraid we will still be sitting here in 20 years discussing the same thing".

The Duke of Sussex introduced Sir Elton as he launched the billion-dollar MenStar Coalition at an global Aids conference in Amsterdam, and praised the star for campaigning to eradicate the disease.

Under PrEP, anti-HIV medication originally used in the treatment of infected patients is administered to healthy individuals in order to prevent infection.

"Too many around the world are still ignoring the damaging knock-on effect on education and other community services from not prioritizing HIV prevention and treatment", he said. "If we want to win this fight, if we want to end AIDS once and for all, we must make men part of the solution".

On the second day of a major worldwide AIDS conference in Amsterdam, the two lent their mega-wattage star power to calls for action to end the lingering stigma around the virus and protect generations to come.

Some 37 million people live with HIV today, and about 1.8 million new infections were recorded previous year.

Researchers have identified a promising new class of antibodies that protects against infection from HIV-1, the virus that causes AIDS.

While most countries have significantly scaled up their HIV treatment programmes, some to the extent of reaching 80% of people living with HIV with antiretroviral therapy, the HIV prevention benefits of treatment that countries had hoped to achieve are not yet being realized.

Nelson Mandela's grandson, Ndaba Mandela, was also part of the launch and told delegates that the MenStar Coalition would allow men to "finally fully participate in creating an HIV-free generation of the future".

"We stand here at a moment when the progress we have fought so hard for is at risk from a risky complacency".
