#08:20 PM: Lunar Eclipse 2018: Timings in India, how to watch: The total lunar eclipse or "Chandra Grahan" in India will start at around 10:44 pm in the night of July 27.

The "totality" period, where light from the Moon was totally obscured, lasted for one hour, 43 minutes.

The so-called "blood moon", when it turns a deep red, will be visible at different times in Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.

While other colours in the spectrum are blocked and scattered by the Earth's atmosphere, red light tends to make it through easier.

The moon passed in front of the sun, casting a 70-mile-wide shadow.

The next eclipse to last that long will occur on June 9, 2123, but it will not be visible from Australia.

Skywatchers around much of the world have begun watching a complete lunar eclipse that is the longest of this century which coincides with Mars' closest approach in 15 years.

"If you were standing on the moon in this eclipse, you would see the sun and then the earth would come in the way and blot out the sun", said Fabian.

In the Middle East, the moon rose above the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi while in Kenya it rose over Marabou storks nesting in Nairobi's trees.

Pitts said that the "blood moon" phrase was only recently attached to the phenomenon.
