Avid biker Greg Manteufel was forced to have the bottom of his legs amputated below the knee after capnocytophaga - a awful bacteria - caused him to lose all blood circulation there through sepsis.

He contracted a blood infection after being licked by the dog, thought to be his own, according to Fox6.

Greg Manteufel reportedly began developing flu-like symptoms a few weeks ago. It's situation Manteufel's wife, Dawn Manteufel, still does not understand. "Looked like somebody beat him up with a baseball bat", Dawn Manteufel said.

Subsequent testing revealed that Manteufel had contracted an infection from a bacteria identified as capnocytophaga, which is found in dog saliva. However, there have only been about 500 cases logged in the USA and Canada since 1976 of the bacteria causing sepsis when no dog bite was found. His blood pressure dropped and the circulation in his limbs declined.

"There's no choice. We have no choice but to be positive and make the best of it", said Dawn Manteufel.

Doctors say this case is simply a fluke.

A GoFundMe Account has been set up to help with Manteufel's medical bills.

Manteufel's GoFundMe page states that Capnocytophaga canimorsus is fairly common and grows in the mouths of up to 60 percent of dogs and 17 percent of cats.

Within a week, Manteufel's legs were amputated from the knees down.

Within days of being admitted to the hospital, Manteufel had to have both of his feet amputated.

"This bacteria caused the sepsis in Greg's body that has completely changed not only Greg's life but his entire family's as well".

If you have one of these conditions and are bitten by a cat or dog, the CDC recommends calling your doctor immediately to describe your animal contact.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is commonly transmitted by dog bites and is usually life-threatening to people who suffer from alcoholism or are asplenic, meaning their spleens don't function normally.

"Sometimes it decreases so much that the arms and legs just die", Dr. Silvia Munoz-Price told WITI. "He is so thankful to be alive today and is taking one day at a time". Although many people may not show any symptoms of the infection, those with compromised immune systems can face severe illness.
