City of Lies: Johnny Depp's Notorious BIG film shelved

Deadline reports that City of Lies, the crime drama starring Depp as an LAPD detective (alongside Forest Whitaker as a journalist) investigating the 1997 drive-by murder of Notorious B.I.G., has been pulled from the film's planned September 7 release - a date that was significant because it would have marked the 46th birthday of Biggie Smalls. Unfortunately, it would appear that the film is no longer slated to be released on its original date.

Global Road Entertainment didn't respond to a request for comment, but it's quite possible that the film was pulled from the release schedule due to all the negative press around Depp. The studio chose to put the movie on hold as marketing such a film with Johnny Depp as a star would be a challenge right now, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Depp has faced a number of legal and financial woes, recently granting a wide-ranging interview to Rolling Stone that showcased the actor's decline. Depp's character, disgraced LAPD Detective Russell Poole has spent years trying to solve the crime, while Jackson (played by Forest Whitaker) is a reporter desperate for answers. It was directed by Brad Furman (The Infiltrator) from a script by Christian Contreras, based on the book by Randall Sullivan.
