Samsung Begins Mass Production of 4-Bit 4TB SSD for Consumers

Samsung Starts Mass Production of'First 4 Bit Consumer SSD

You can get a ton of storage for your new laptop - but you'll probably have to pay an arm and a leg for it. Putting a 4TB SSD in the new MacBook Pro immediately adds $3,200 to the cost, for example. Through the use of a 3-bit controller and Samsung's own TurboWrite technology - which drastically increases sequential write speeds using algorithmic magic - the company puts its latest consumer venture as quick as other fourth-gen TLC SSDs it produces. A new round of NAND flash production at Samsung could finally make SSDs in the multi-terabyte range affordable and mainstream.

A major impediment to making 4-bit NAND a reality has been the substantial performance hit due to lower charge levels.

Samsung's announcement this week sees the company start mass producing quad-level-cell (QLC) which allows for a 1Tb capacity per chip.

Astros release statement after activating Roberto Osuna from restricted list
Hinch says Osuna will join the Astros in Los Angeles on Sunday and be activated for the series finale against the Dodgers . Osuna was placed on administrative leave May 8 after he was arrested by Toronto police on suspicion of assaulting a woman.

With the amount of data being stored in each cell increasing from three bits to four, performance and speed of the new SSDs were expected to decrease.

While leading 4TB hard drives now cost $100, Samsung's existing 860 EVO 4TB SSD costs over $1,000.

And Samsung reckons this SSD tech will filter through the rest of the memory world, which could yield cheaper high-capacity SSDs for consumers. They are also the first NVMe drives to use 4-bit QLC memory chips (Samsung will release 2.5-inch SATA drives that use QLC chips later this year). Samsung hasn't announced specific pricing, but 4-bit cells should narrow the gap a little.

Chinese exports accelerate as fresh USA tariffs loom
USTR said there were 279 new goods to be targeted in the dispute over China's policies promoting theft of American technology. The Trump administration has finalized a new round of 25 percent tariffs on an additional $16 billion in Chinese imports.

"The new and as-yet unnamed product family will include 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB drives in 2.5" form factor housings, all based on 1Tb V-NAND chips.

"Samsung's new 4-bit SATA SSD will herald a massive move to terabyte-SSDs for consumers", says Samsung EVP Jaesoo Han.

The Samsung 4TB 850 EVO SSD is now listed on Amazon.co.uk with a £1,399.99 retail price (albeit discounted to £999.99 at present).
